The Healthy Nevada Community Challenge is intended to be a fun and competitive way to steer our local community toward better health. It is possible to be THIN and still not be HEALTHY. In addition to monitoring weight, in the form of BMI (Body Mass Index), the Challenge will be using a lipid panel to gauge the progress that the participants will be making over the course of an entire year.
Simple test: If your waist circumference measurment is greater than 40" for men or greater than 35" for women, you are in the high-risk category for Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and other diseases (Source: NIH). To check and see if you are at risk, Place the tape measure around your middle, just above your hip bones but below your rib cage. BREATHE OUT and measure.
This is how it works:
- Register yourself or a team to compete in the Challenge. Each person receives an anonymous registration ID that will be used to record their test results every four months for the coming year (four blood tests, total).
- Visit either Carson Valley Medical Center or Carson Tahoe Medical Center and tell them that you're participating in the Healthy Nevada Community Challenge. Have blood drawn for a Lipid Panel.
- When your results come in, log back into this website and enter your results.
- Each trimester (every four months) those individuals and teams with the biggest positive change will receive prizes provided by our sponsors.
If you can't register online, please pick up a registration form (or print one out from this site) and mail it in. We'll respond with your registration ID shortly. We'll also be happy to enter your test results for you on a quarterly basis using your anonymous registration ID.
